How our domain name search tool works

TLD-List is a free domain search that checks domain availability and tracks domain registration prices across more than 3,000 extensions. Enter the name you have in mind and the domain name checker returns a clear status for every extension you care about, next to the price you pay at each registrar. It is built to help you find the perfect domain name without opening ten registrar tabs.

1

Enter your desired domain name

Type it into the search bar. No account needed. Use our domain search tool with a bare word or a full domain name including the extension, compare domain names one at a time, or work through a shortlist until you land on names that fit your brand.

2

Check domain availability in real time

Domain names marked with a green ✔︎ are available to register, while those marked with an X are already taken. See the statuses below for a complete legend, including premium and aftermarket domains that may still be available for purchase.

Compare registrars and register a domain

For every available domain we line up registration, renewal and transfer prices. Pick one, complete the purchase there, and buy your domain at the price shown. We never mark it up.

What your domain search shows: available, taken, premium or aftermarket

A checker that only answers yes or no leaves you guessing. Each domain search here returns one of four states for the domain names you tried, and every state tells you what to do next.

Available: register a domain at the lowest price

The domain is available for registration right now. We list every registrar that carries that TLD, sorted by first-year registration price, with renewal and transfer costs beside it so you compare the real cost of ownership and not just the headline number. Compare registrars.

Unknown: we couldn’t determine its registration status

When we cannot confirm the registration status of a domain name, we say so rather than guess. Run the search again in a moment, or open the registrar link to confirm before you buy.

Taken: use a WHOIS lookup to see who owns it

Someone already registered the name. A free WHOIS lookup shows creation and expiry dates and, where the record is public, a way to contact the owner. WHOIS privacy hides personal details on most modern registrations, so expect a forwarding form rather than an inbox.

Premium or Aftermarket: priced above the standard rate or owned, and listed for resale

The registry, not the registrar, flags some domain names as premium and sets its own price, often hundreds of dollars. Premium pricing usually applies to the first registration and sometimes to every renewal after it, so read both figures before you commit.

Check domain availability across 3,000+ TLDs and every registrar we track

Most domain checkers test a handful of extensions. We track more than 3,000 top-level domains and refresh registrar pricing every three hours, so the comparison is current whether you search a .com, a country-code TLD or a new domain extension nobody else lists. Search once and see how the same domain names price up across every registrar we cover. Need help choosing a domain name?

Domain data that goes beyond a basic domain search

Domain pricing comparison

The domain search comparison table shows registration, renewal, and transfer prices across different domain extensions, along with the registrar offering the lowest 3-year cost. This lets you compare the combined cost of registration and renewals over three years and find the best long-term value.

Accounting for promotional pricing

Many registrars offer domain name promo codes and discounts for new customers. The Cheapest Registration column in the domain search comparison table factors in most available promotions, helping you find the lowest registration price.

How to pick a strong domain name before you register it

Keep it short, easy to say and memorable

A made-up but pronounceable word beats a long descriptive phrase. Short domain names travel better out loud, over the phone or in a podcast ad, and they leave room for your brand identity to grow past the first product.

Account for user behaviour

People type what they hear, and they default to .com. If your name drops a letter, or you pick a short extension over the .com, register the obvious variants too and forward them to your main domain.

Let the extension do some work

.io reads as software, .studio as a practice, .de as German. The right extension can reinforce your brand and free up a shorter name than the .com equivalent that is already taken.

Check trademarks before you register

A domain name that infringes a registered trademark can be taken from you through a dispute process even after you have paid for it. Search your name against trademark databases in the countries where you plan to operate.

Search social handles at the same time

Consistency across your domain and social profiles makes you easier to find. Check whether the handle is available on the platforms you care about before you commit to a name.

Factor in the total cost of ownership

A $1 first year on a $40 renewal is a bad deal on a domain you intend to keep. Compare the ten-year cost in the table above to find the best domain for your budget before you finish the purchase.

Domain name search tool FAQs

Type in the domain name you want. The tool checks it in real time against the domain name system, and every domain search loads results in under a second, showing a clear available or taken status for the exact domain and extension you searched.

You still land somewhere useful. Instead of a dead end, the checker suggests alternative domain names and extensions close to what you searched, so you can find and register something similar without starting over. Sometimes the alternative turns out to be the perfect domain for what you're building anyway.

Most domain checkers stop at a yes or no. This one goes further. For every available domain, it pulls the cheapest registration, renewal, and transfer price from registrars worldwide and lists them right next to the availability result, so you see the real cost of the domain before you decide where to buy it.

The search tool checks pricing and availability across registrars worldwide for the top-level domain (TLD) you searched, then surfaces the lowest registration price automatically. You do not need to open registrar sites one by one. The comparison happens the moment your search returns a result, with the registrar offering the best price right there next to it.

All three. Registration is usually a first-year rate, and renewal is what you pay every year after that, often at a higher price. If you ever move the domain to a different registrar, transfer price matters too. Showing registration, renewal, and transfer prices side by side means you're comparing the total cost of owning the domain, not just the number that catches your eye first.

Yes. It's a free domain search: no account needed, and no fee to check availability or compare pricing. You only pay when you register a domain name, and that payment goes directly to the registrar you choose, at the price shown.

The tool covers a wide range of domain extensions, from popular TLDs like .com and .io to smaller, niche, and country-specific options. Whether you search domain names one at a time or compare a shortlist across extensions, pricing loads instantly for each. Checking a few options side by side helps you land on a strong domain within budget, and available domain names show up across every extension you're considering.

Yes. The registrar list spans well-known names, including Cloudflare, alongside smaller and regional registrars that often carry lower prices on specific extensions. Cloudflare, for example, sells domains at its wholesale cost with no markup, which is worth knowing when you're comparing it against a registrar running a first-year discount that jumps at renewal. The tool tracks pricing on every domain across the registrars it covers, so that kind of trade-off is easy to spot.

The search results link straight to the registrar showing the cheapest price for that domain, and you complete registration there. The checker itself doesn't sell domains. Its job is to get you to the best deal fast, then get out of the way.
